Assisting Students through Difficulties

As faculty and staff, you are often the first to know when a student is experiencing emotional or psychological distress. You are also in a unique position to give such students supportive guidance and help them identify university resources for assistance.

With this in mind, Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) has prepared two helpful documents, one for faculty and staff called "Assisting Students in Distress," and one for students called "Assisting Peers in Distress." The Graduate Division suggests that you review both documents so that you are familiar with them before problems arise.

Every spring, Student Health and the Graduate Division also team up to offer a discussion group aimed at helping faculty and staff be better prepared to assist students in distress. Watch your inbox for announcements about the next session.

UCOP has published a handbook and training resource for promoting student mental health system wide.

All SHCS events designed to help students avoid stress and stay healthy are listed on their Google calendar

Finally, please make sure that your students are aware of the personal and academic support resources listed on the Graduate Division website
